Abstract in English
This paper assesses whether female presidents propose more legislation to promote women's economic development compared to male presidents. For this, legislation produced by the Executive power at the national level in Brazil and Chile between 1999 and 2019 was analyzed, considering the governments of Michelle Bachelet and Dilma Rousseff in comparison to male presidents in both countries. The results show that both female presidents produced more than their male counterparts. In Chile, female participation in the labor market increased, but was followed by an increase in the wage gap between men and women during the Bachelet government. In Brazil, there was an increase in female participation in the labor market and a decrease in the wage gender gap during the Dilma administration. However, with the departure of the female presidents, advances have not been maintained over time.
