Abstract in English
Since their emergence in the European court in the 16th century, bodies, stays and corsets have established a unique and intimate relation with women's bodies. The different meanings associated with how they were worn can be read in the examination of the socioeconomic and political dynamics that surrounded women who donned them. Aiming to recognize the different configurations assumed by such garments in order to associate with the discourses that shaped notions of femininity, this qualitative research analyzes how bodies, stays and corsets were dressed, their materiality and the professionals who were responsible for making them. The analysis focuses on the European territory, especially France and England, between the 16th and 19th centuries. The main sources of this work were museum collections, patents, periodicals, and photographs. Secondary sources are defined by the historiography of clothing, the body, medicine, sex, and motherhood. We support that stays and corsets become female markers during their popularization process. The changes occurred in their shapes, materials used, and in their nomenclature, are presented as reflections of the social expectations that surrounded the bodies of those who wore them. In this context, the medical essay is evident in the manipulation, appropriation, and production of such notions in order to biologically validate women to fulfill their social roles, restricting them to the domains of domesticity, motherhood and breastfeeding of their children. However, wearing stays and corsets also represented a form of insurgency against the same purposes and, therefore, prove to be witnesses of the symbolic dimensions that built female corporeity.
