Abstract in English
Graphics are frequently used to summarize and present data, both by scientists and the media present in daily life as a whole. Despite this, they are often a language difficult to understand for many people (CHINN; BREWER, 2001; FREEDMAN; SHAH, 2001). Some authors argue that the skills related to graphics reading and interpreting are hardly acquired and, therefore, should be an explicit focus on education (BERG; SMITH, 1994). So the purpose of this study is to investigate how the teacher acts in the processes of reading and interpreting graphs in biology classes. We assume that chart reading is a social practice and that their significance as symbols, occurs through interaction with other symbols such as words and gestures (ROTH et al., 1999). We analyzed audio-video recordings of an Investigative Teaching Sequence (SEI) trying to identify the use of these symbols by a teacher while reading and interpreting graphs extracted from a scientific paper. Based on the concept of "languages of science" (Lemke, 1998a) the symbols used were classified as languages. We noticed that the teacher used three kinds of them to significate these charts: verbal language, gestures and inscriptions (LATOUR, 1987). Different theoretical frameworks were used to analyze the use of each of these languages. The study from Mortimer and Scott (2002) enabled the analysis of teacher"s verbal (oral) language. Through him, we were able to understand how the discourse was managed in analyzed classes. Besides, it was also possible to characterize teacher"s interventions performed through this language. In order to analyze gestures" use, we adopted the framework of Kendon (2004). It allowed the identified gestures classification and also an understanding of the relationship between gestures and inscriptions use. These, which are consisted by the same graphs extracted from the scientific paper and also by other ones, designed on the blackboard, had their utilization analyzed together with the other languages, under Márquez, Izquierdo and Espinet (2003) framework. That"s because we found that inscriptions were used together with verbal language and gestures. The languages" combined analysis through the adopted frameworks enabled the study of all the used symbols. It contributed to the understanding that the used languages were articulated in order to conduct graphics" reading and interpretation, playing analogous functions in most of the meaning making processes in utterances, but also specializing them.
