Índice de refração não linear

Abstract in English
This work investigates the nature of the nonlinear refractive index in ruby (Al2 O3 : Cr3+), alexandrite (Be Al2 O4 : Cr3+) and chromiumdoped gadolinium aluminate (Gd AI O3 : Cr3+). We have used, for this purpose, the techniques of nearly degenerate two-wave mixing (NDTWN), self-diffraction of the incident beams in a population grating and excited state absorption spectroscopy. We demonstrated, for the first time, the energy transfer due to the two-wave mixing in alexandrite and Gd AI O3 : Cr3+, as well as we verified in the later the first-order self-diffraction of the strong beam and measured its intensity dependence on the population grating velocity. These results allowed us to obtain the nonlinear index n2 (n2 = n'2 + i n”2), the saturation intensity, and the lifetime of the 2E metaestable state of Cr3+ in the different hosts. We came to the conclusion that the UV charge-transfer band characteristic of the Cr3+ gives the main contribution to n2 and allows, in the case of heavely doped crystals, a photon-assisted en-resonance energy transfer. As a consequence or this energy transfer process, we observed the dependence of the imaginary part of the nonlinear index (nŖ) of Gd Al O3 : Cr3+ on the incident beam intensity. We also proposed a theoretical model which allows the description or nearly degenerate multi-wave mixing in saturate absorbers. In this model, the NDTWM is regarded as the zero-order term of the intersecting beams self-diffraction in a saturate travelling wave and the saturation effects are correctly predicted.
