Trata-se de uma coletânea formada por artigos e capítulos publicados pelo autor, desde que se tornou docente da Universidade de São Paulo. Antecedidos por uma introdução de caráter teórico e metodológico, que os encadeia e articula, versam sobre a atuação pública dos “intelectuais da educação” na imprensa paulista, por meio da análise de seus discursos e intervenções públicas, as quais tiveram como motivação e objeto as questões contemporâneas em torno da escola pública e da educação. Os textos reunidos abordam um conjunto variado de temas e abordagens, dando ênfase às relações entre os intelectuais, a esfera pública e as culturas políticas, suas expectativas e os presumíveis efeitos de suas intervenções sobre a opinião pública e as políticas educacionais empreendidas ao longo do século XX.

It is a collection of articles and chapters published by the author since he became a professor at the University of São Paulo. Preceded by an introduction of a theoretical and methodological character, which chains and articulates them, they deal with the public performance of the "intellectuals of education" in the São Paulo press through the analysis of their discourses and public interventions, which had as motivation and subject the contemporary issues around the public school and education. The collected texts address various themes and approaches, emphasizing the relations between intellectuals, the public sphere, and political cultures, their expectations, and the presumed effects of their interventions on public opinion and educational policies undertaken throughout the twentieth century.
