A morte é um tema tabu nos séculos XX/XXI, causando sofrimento adicional àqueles que estão vivendo situações de perda e limite. Há diversas questões que surgem e demandam reflexões: é possível uma educação para a morte neste milênio, educação entendida como busca de sentido, desenvolvimento pessoal e também como preparação de profissionais de saúde e educação para promover esta discussão? A tese aqui defendida é que ela não só é necessária e desejável, como possível. Do ponto de vista formal, o presente texto está divido em três partes. Na primeira, "Atitudes diante da morte", o capítulo "O homem diante da morte" apresenta a visão ocidental, na concepção de Philippe Ariès; o seguinte, "Sobre a morte e o morrer - a rehumanização de um processo", traz as propostas de Kübler-Ross e Cicely Saunders; encerrando esta parte introdutória, o capítulo "A morte escancarada" refere-se às situações de violência e sua veiculação pelos meios de comunicação de massa. Na segunda parte, intitulada "Temas em tanatologia", desenvolvo os seguintes capítulos: "Desenvolvimento da tanatologia, área de estudos sobre a morte"; "Os profissionais de saúde e educação e a morte", e "Bioética nas questões de vida e morte". Estes são alguns dos temas que fundamentam minha prática como educadora nos diversos aspectos envolvendo a questão da morte. Na terceira parte, "O desenvolvimento da área de estudos sobre a morte no Instituto de Psicologia da USP, desafio na formação de profissionais desaúde e educação", apresento minha experiência na área da docência, pesquisa e extensão, a criação do Laboratório de Estudos sobre a Morte (LEM) e o Projeto "Falando de Morte"; apresento, também, propostas para o desenvolvimento futuro desta área, em "A educação para a morte no novo milênio"

Death is a tabu subject in XX/XXI centuries, causing more suffering to those living losses. There are many questions that need reflections, is it possible to have death education in this millennium defined as search for meaning, personal development and as preparation of health and education professionals? Our thesis is not only that death education is needed, desirable, but possible. This thesis is divided in three parts. The first part is Attitudes in relation to death, the chapter "Mankind and death", presents the western conception based on Philippe Ariès books; the second is "About death and dying, the rehumanization of death", presents the ideas of Kübler-Ross and Cicely Saunders; and to close this first part, the chapter "The 'wide opened' death" presents the violence in streets, homes and in the media. In the second part, "Themes in thanatology", the following issues are presented: "Thanatology: development of the area of studies about death", the history of the emergence of this area in the United States of America and Brazil, "The health and education professionals and death" and "Bioethics in the issues about end of life and death". These are some of the subjects that substantiate my praxis as a educator in several aspects concerning the issues about death. In the third part, "The development of the studies about death in the Psychology Institute - University of São Paulo - Brazil, a challenge in the education of health and education professional, 1present my experience in teaching, research and community care, the creation of the Death and Bereavement Study Center and the project "Speaking about death" - educational videos, including also proposals concerning the future development of the area, in the chapter "Death education in the new millennium"
