Originados como um ritual em homenagem a Zeus, os Jogos Olímpicos representaram para os atletas da Antiguidade uma forma do ser humano alcançar uma condição divina, caracterizada pela permanência. Recriado no final do século XIX os Jogos Olímpicos enfrentaram diversas dificuldades de estabelecimento até conquistar a condição de um dos principais fenômenos socioculturais contemporâneos, que atravessou o século XX acompanhando par e passo a dinâmica social e os interesses comerciais e políticos que foram sendo agregados a esse evento. Os atletas contemporâneos, que em princípio tiveram sua condição social e identidade associadas a amadores, amantes da prática esportiva e representantes de um grupo social que se dedicava exclusivamente às realizações atléticas, viram esse papel ser alterado em função das transformações às quais os Jogos Olímpicos foram submetidos. O objetivo desse trabalho é analisar o imaginário esportivo brasileiro sob o olhar dos atletas medalhistas olímpicos, a partir de suas histórias de vida. Por meio dessas histórias é possível atentar para as transformações ocorridas no ideário olímpico ao longo do século XX e os desdobramentos desse movimento na organização e manifestação do esporte brasileiro. O fio condutor para refletir sobre tais questões são as concepções de relações de poder, elaboradas a partir da instituição imaginária da sociedade, e as diferenças e identidades no sentido em que são problematizadas e elaboradas por teóricos dos Estudos Culturais. O instrumento de investigação utilizado nessa pesquisa é a história de vida tida como uma forma particular de história oral que capta e organiza a memória, que interessa ao pesquisador por aprender valores que transcendem o caráter individual do que é transmitido e que se insere na cultura do grupo social ao qual o sujeito que narra pertence

Originated as a ritual in Zeus's honor, the Olympic Games represented to the Antiquity athletes the possibility of humans to get the divine condition, characterized by permanency. Recreated in the end of XIXth century the Olympic Games faced many difficulties to be established until acquire the condition of most important contemporary social culture phenomenon, that crossed over the XXth century strictly following the social dynamic and the politic and commercial interests that had been attached to this event. The contemporary athletes, that at the beginning had their social condition and identity as amateurs, lovers of sportive practice and representative of a social group dedicated only to the athletic realizations, saw this role be changed by the transformations of the Olympic Games. The purpose of this research is to analyze the Brazilian sportive imaginary from the point of view of the Olympic medalists, through their life histories. By these histories it is possible to understand the transformation of the Olympic ideal through the XXth century and their consequences in the organization and manifestation of Brazilian Sport. The main reference to think about these questions are the power relations concepts, elaborated from the imaginary institution of society, and the differences and identities in a way that they are thought and elaborated by cultural studies teorics. The investigation instruments was the life history used as a particular kind of oral history that subdue and organize the memory, that is of the researcher's interest to learn values that transcend the individual character about what is transmitted and come into the culture of the social group where narrateur belongs
