An optimal control point of view is taken to compute the static equilibrium configuration of pipelines laying on the sea floor and during the lateral abandon/recovery operation. The unilateral character of the constraints imposed by the sea floor and by the cables, respectively, is the common feature to both problems which permits an unified treatment. These constraints, originally expressed as inequalities, are rewritten in form of functionals to be minimized. This is the key point of the work. The use of state equations subject to a set of boundary conditions in order to represent the static equilibrium configuration of the structure allows the problem to be viewed as an optimal control one. In the case of the pipeline laying on the sea floor, the vertical displacements are assumed small and the state equations can be linearized. Since the functional is quadratic, the discretization of the model leads to a quadratic programming problem whose numerical solution can be easily obtained. In the case of the pipeline lateral abandon/recovery, as a consequence of the possible occurrence of large vertical displacements, the state equations are nonlinear. The problem is expressed directly in the form of a nonlinear programming problem where the state equations represent constraints on the variables along the free span of the pipeline. The simplicity of both the formulation and the solution of the problems under the proposed optimal control approach must be emphasized.
