Relato da evolução do aglomerado urbano de São Paulo desde os tempos pré-coloniais - selecionando aspectos geográficos e contextos econômicos associados à circulação no território e à formação do seu espaço - organizado com base na tecnologia de transporte disponível em cada período, pontuando: o descobrimento do continente sul-americano; a fundação de São Paulo; o primeiro e o segundo ciclo de mineração na região; o ciclo do açúcar; a produção de café; o fim do Pacto Colonial; a Independência do Brasil; a Proclamação da República; o surgimento da indústria paulista; a segunda, terceira e quarta repúblicas; a ditadura militar; e a nova república. A conclusão do relato fundamenta a necessidade de ampliação da rede de transporte público de alta capacidade com um desenho que atenda a escala metropolitana atual de São Paulo, usufruindo das dinâmicas regionais propícias à ordenação da ocupação do território, com a adoção de novos padrões de acessibilidade e com a aceleração da implantação da estrutura de transporte planejada, revertendo o ritmo histórico de sua evolução.

Register of the evolution of the São Paulo urban agglomeration from the pre-colonial ages onwards - Focus on geographical aspects and economic contexts associated to circulation in the territory and the construction of its area - organized in periods covering the discovery of the American continent; the foundation of São Paulo; the first and the second mining cycles in the region; the end of the colonial covenant; the independence of Brazil; the implantation of the first railway; the proclamation of Republic; the end of the railway era and the beginning of the roadway era; the coming of the vehicles manufacturers; the construction of the first metro linear; the implantation of the bus corridors and the implantation of the monorails. The conclusion grounds the need for the implantation of high-capacity public transport network with a design which meet the current São Paulo metropolitan scale, considering the regional dynamics propitious for the ordination of territory use with adoption of new standards of accessibility besides reversing the slow implantation of the transport structure planned.
