Abstract in English
This study investigates how companies manage the transformation of their current
capabilities to carry out responsible innovations, given the growing concerns and
expectations of their responsibilities as pro-social actors. Although the existing literature
provides an understanding of how organizations respond to technological change,
empirical guidance and theoretical understanding are more limited with respect to
responsible innovations. Through an analysis of multiple cases with four large consumer
good companies, a structure of responsible innovation was proposed that is based on
several levels: heuristics (cognition), routines, organizational capabilities, and strategies,
aiming at the mitigation of social problems. The data analysis suggests that the
responsible innovation of an organization is a dynamic process in which companies work
in different configurations, in a co-evolutionary way, which were called learning, balance,
incorporation and transformation. Each of them has distinct characteristics, in addition to
specific mechanisms that are essential for companies to develop responsible innovations.
The present study advances the knowledge about organizational capacities, responsible
innovations and sustainability, by proposing a framework of multiple configurations,
towards responsible transformation.
