Preparação de uma Areia Refratária Resinada para Consumo em Aciaria
Keywords in Portuguese
abertura livre
areia refratária
fundição em casca
sinterização

Preparation of a Coated Nozzle Filler Sand for Application on Continuous Casting

Abstract in English
The increasing production of steel with higher purity and the need to achieve the 100% free opening rate in continuous casting in the steel industry, makes companies producing nozzle filler sand that guarantee the good process's performance. Coating processes are used to improve or confer desired properties. Organic and inorganic resins are widely used in quartz sands in the foundry industry. This work consists on preparation of nacional coated nozzler filler sand. For this study, parameters used to coating process on quartz sand applied to the shell moulding process were considered. The parameters studied were the content of resin, catalyst and parting agent. The concentrations of these 3 factors were varied, resulting in 9 experiments. From the experiments results, 2 extra experiments (10 and 11) were performed, varying only the carbon content, using the best behavior experimental parameters (experiment 7). The obtained results showed that the selected shell moulding parameters were sufficient to cover nozzle filler sand, forming a resin film. The binder altered the physical properties of the precursor sand, such as the degree of sintering that increased from 3 to 4, approaching the standard sand, as well as increasing the decomposition temperature. Thus, the 11 experiment was the one that most approached the physicochemical characteristics in about standard sand. It was evidenced that standard sand uses a different resin from that has been chosen on this work.
