Abstract in English
The race to improve and discover new superconducting and topological materials -- either to map the magnetic field generated by brain activity or to start the era of quantum computing, in cutting edge applications -- has been one of the greatest scientific challenges of our decade. Within this scenario, the present dissertation aims to investigate the electronic-structure and topological properties of CdI2-prototype transition metal dichalcogenides using first-principle calculations based on the Density Functional Theory (DFT). Our calculations reveal that NiTe2 is a type-II Dirac semimetal, harboring massless electronic excitations with breaking Lorentz's invariance, thus, highly direction-dependent within the Brillouin zone. The non-trivial band topology of this system can be attributed to the dispersion of the p orbitals of tellurium atoms under the effects of spin-orbital interaction and the trigonal crystalline field. We have also demonstrated that the pseudo-relativistic quasiparticles, emerging from the system, can be precisely controlled through small strain states applied at the structure and the doping of alkali metals, bridging the way for novel phenomenologies, quantum state transitions (such as hybrid type-I and type-II semimetallic phases and Lifshitz transitions), and electronic devices based on the spin degree of freedom. ZrTe2, of the same prototype, also reveals a topological semimetallic phase derived from the crossings between bands with distinct irreducible representations and the formation of a non-trivial gap -- the latter, driven by an parity inversion mechanism induced by breaking the degeneracy of electronic states under the action of spin-orbital coupling. The electronic dispersion, carrier density and energy location of the hole-pockets and electron-pockets at high symmetry points in the first Brillouin zone of ZrTe2 support a competition between CDW (driven by an excitonic condensation) and superconducting phases on the Fermi surface. In addition, our calculations indicate that intercalation of transition metals species between the Te layers significantly changes the electronic-structure and the hybridization of the low-energy states, thus manipulating the different electronic-states emerging from the ZrTe2 system.
