According to the hedge literature, the use of derivative financial instruments for protection purposes can reduce bankruptcy costs, agency costs (underinvestment problems and asset risk substitution) and informational asymmetry in organizations. The literature addresses these problems as pricing drivers for the cost of capital offered by creditors, therefore, by minimizing them through an active hedging policy, the company should obtain resources from creditors at a lower cost of capital. In this sense, the present work examined whether companies that engage in corporate hedge policies reduce their cost with third party capital. For this purpose, the work used the panel data approach, based on data from publicly traded Brazilian companies between the years 2010 to 2019. In addition to using the proxy variable, net financial expenses on costly average liabilities for third-party capital costs, the work analyzed other variables, among them: (i) the average spread of the interest rate of weighted issue of private securities issued by the organization, (ii) the average spread of the interest rate of trading, in the secondary market, weighted of private securities , (iii) the weighted average spread on loans and financing from BNDES and (iv) the average interest rate spread calculated by the sector cost provided by Instituto Assaf© plus a premium for the degree of leverage of the company in relation to its sector . In order to provide robustness of panel data estimations and with the objective of mitigating endogeneity problems such as omission of the relevant variable, dynamic endogeneity and reverse causality, the instrumental variable method, the simultaneous equations method and the dynamic panel method estimated by the generalized moments method. The results found showed that the use of hedge has a negative effect on the cost of trading debentures and on the variable calculated from the sectorial cost. Regarding the level of subsidized sources and their joint use with the hedge policy on the different capital costs of third parties, no statistically significant relationships were obtained. In addition, the effect of initiating and suspending the hedge policy on the different proposed debt costs was analyzed. Companies that initiated the hedge policy had no effect on the cost of debt, unlike companies that suspended the strategy, as they incurred higher costs over time. This evidence suggests that hedging is a mandatory policy in modern corporate financial decisions, especially for companies with operations in countries with high market frictions, and the decision to suspend it may increase the cost of debt. The importance of the work is found in the effect that the use of the hedge has on the different costs of debt of the companies, and the concomitant relation that the cost of capital has on the value of the firms. Therefore, the relationship is important in the view of creditors aiming at reducing the risk for payment of cash flows from loans, and in the view of shareholders aiming at maximizing the value of the firm.
