Abstract in English
Geographical Indications (IGs) are a growing phenomenon in the national scenario, encouraged by consumers' search for quality in the most diverse products. For that matter, local producers come together to establish standards of production, differentiation and protection of product, creating competitive advantages through region valorization and its natural/human characteristics. Using an experiment as method, consumers' brain responses were examined by electroencephalography (EEG). The collected data were compared in 3 different ways. First, the impact of coffee origins on participant's brain responses was analyzed and it was also possible to estimate the preference of groups for one of the tasted coffees. In the second analysis, the focus was driven to gender moderating variable and the comparison was structured by participant's gender: 2 (Source information: with GI and without GI) x 2 (Gender: Male and Female), to analyze the influence of the product's GI on brain responses of men in relation to women. Finally, the third comparison, 2 (Source information: with GI and without GI) x 2 (Involvement: Low and High), examined the influence of coffee origin for low and high involvement participants. The sample consisted of students from USP and the coffee used was from a Brazilian known brand. It was verified, through the power spectral density, that the IG influences consumers in general and differently in men and women, of low and high involvement. Women in general and of high involvement were those who showed more differences in power in waves and channels. The group showed also preference for coffee with GI. Men in general and of low involvemnt showed power spectral density differences between stimuli, however in lesser quantities. The men's group preferred the coffee without GI. In theoretical terms, the results demonstrate that there is a great influence of origin on consumers in general, that it differs according to the level of involvement and to gender. The research is one of the first to reconcile the effects of origin information with a neuroscience tool. The results collaborate with the literature of region and country of origin, adding to the discussion about roles of moderators in the power of influence of an origin information. In practical terms, it suggests the differentiation of marketing actions and planning of Brazilian GIs.
