The purpose of this work is to investigate the way in which simultaneous competition and collaboration, known as coopetition, manifests itself among specialty coffee producers and their associations, due to the innovative environment provided by the search for the superior quality of the bean. The primary sector is little explored by the coopetitive approach, possibly due to the mistaken belief that there is little competition among farmers; in different niches, such as specialty coffees, the cooperative culture is confronted by individuality. The data for the research were collected from semi-structured interviews conducted with actors that comprise the Geographical Indications of Alta Mogiana and the Cerrado Mineiro Region, consisting of coffee growers and their relatives who work in the business, cooperatives, supporting institutions and association managers. The analysis of the data followed the general precepts of codification, whose emerging categories allowed to make a simplified representation of the data. The positioning strategy for superior quality was used as a structure to organize the relationship between innovation and coopetition in the context of brazilian coffee farming, emphasizing the technical aspects of control (internal) and marketing (external) of the investigation. The innovative activities explored were identified based on the 4th and last edition of the Oslo Manual. Three coopetition patterns were found: coffee-grower-coffe-grower in the countryside, with a positive influence on improving product quality, facilitated by the mediation of a support institution; coffee-grower-coffe-grower in commercialization, with a positive influence on access to new markets and on relationships with new buyers; and coffee-grower-cooperative in commercialization, whose desired approximation between the producer and the final consumer (Direct Trade) generates a conflict in the collective structure of product flow.
