The CEO's adherence to the Weberian ideal type: a study of diversity in Brazil

Weberian ideal type
Abstract in English
Even in light of evidence of improved organizational climate, increased profits, and better brand market positioning in the face of society, there is still little perception of the diversity represented in the corporate world as one rises to the highest positions of organizational leadership. In the light of the traits leadership theory, different leader features towards diversity are analyzed in the literature. However, the surface level characteristics (SLC) that relate the leader's persona to his or her belonging to a minority group, subject to the discrimination and prejudice typical of the Weberian ideal type are not addressed. In view of this, based on the SLCs, this project seeks to identify the profile of the CEOs of companies listed in the Guia Exame de Sustentabilidade - an important list that honors companies that are a reference in sustainable management. The results corroborate the literature and show pasteurization of the profile, mostly white, male, heterosexual, cis-gender, married, and over 40 years old. This study contributes to the studies on leadership theory and raises the important discussion of not only recognizing, therefore, to which profile of manager the responsibility of representing a large company in Brazil is given but, mainly, to which other profiles this function is not worthy. The expected results propose the need to emphasize the superficial characteristics in detriment only to the performance and behavior of CEOs, who are the great transformers and generators of positive impact for people, business, and the world.
