As denominadas Cadeias Globais de Valor (CGV) configuram as novas relações produtivas e comerciais internacionais e têm assumido papel cada vez mais relevante na recomendação e execução de políticas comerciais e para o crescimento. Nesse contexto, esta pesquisa de tese buscou fazer uma investigação dos efeitos e dos determinantes da participação nas CGV, tentando contribuir com a literatura apresentando novas abordagens a partir de três estudos. Os dois primeiros estudos se destinam a investigar os efeitos da participação nas CGV sobre a produtividade. No primeiro capítulo, o objetivo foi investigar a existência de uma possível causalidade simultânea entre produtividade e CGV. A hipótese é a de que essa relação se caracteriza por um processo endógeno dinâmico de ganhos cumulativos. No segundo capítulo, a análise centra-se num estudo sobre o Brasil, buscando investigar os potenciais ganhos de produtividade proporcionados pela participação nas CGV, em suas diferentes dimensões, bem como identificar setores-chave que incrementam esses ganhos a partir do avanço em cadeias mais complexas. Por fim, o terceiro capítulo destina-se a investigar os determinantes da participação nas CGV. Este estudo inova ao se propor a investigar os determinantes da participação, diferenciando os tipos de atividades desempenhadas nas CGV, conforme indicadores de participação em CGV simples e CGV complexas e, adicionalmente, buscando estimar efeitos de longo prazo a partir do uso de métodos ainda não aplicados nos estudos sobre esse tema.

The so-called Global Value Chains (GVCs) configure new international productive and commercial relations and have assumed an increasingly relevant role in the recommendation and execution of commercial and growth policies. In this context, this thesis research sought to investigate the effects and determinants of participation in GVC, trying to contribute to the literature by presenting new approaches based on three studies. The first two studies are intended to investigate the effects of participation in GVC on productivity. In the first chapter, the objective was to investigate the existence of a possible simultaneous causality between productivity and GVC. The hypothesis is that this relationship is characterized by a dynamic endogenous process of cumulative gains. In the second chapter, the analysis focuses on a study about Brazil, seeking to investigate the potential productivity gains provided by participation in GVC, in its different dimensions, as well as identifying key sectors that increase these gains from the advancement in more complex chains. Finally, the third chapter is intended to investigate the determinants of participation in GVC. This study innovates by proposing to investigate the determinants of participation, differentiating the types of activities performed in the GVC, according to indicators of participation in simple GVC and complex GVC, and, additionally, seeking to estimate long-term effects from the use of methods not yet applied in studies on this topic.
