Abstract in English
This thesis aims to explicit and make intelligible the relationship of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE), Itamaraty, with visual arts and architecture, particularly in its modern versions, understood in a symbiotic relationship. Our hypothesis is that Itamaraty was intentionally involved in the consolidation and promotion of a conception of modern art and architecture as well as of a version of the History of Art in Brazil. The interest of our research focuses on the relationship between the two, the MRE and the modern visual arts and architecture, in the period between the Estado Novo, from 1937 to 1946, and the inauguration of Brasília, in 1960, more in-depth, the period between 1955 and 1960, the time of the construction of the new capital, and, punctually, the inauguration of the Itamaraty Palace, in Brasília, in 1968. This work is based primarily on textual and iconographic documentation, mostly unpublished, which is deposited in the Historic Archives and Map Collection of Itamaraty in Rio de Janeiro
