Abstract in English
This dissertation aims to investigate the process of assimilation of photography by the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) based on the case study of the collaborative work of Claudia Andujar and George Love at the museum, between 1971 and 1976. At this particular moment, in addition to dedicating themselves to photography, they carried out new image technologies and audiovisual researches that gave rise to proposals in accordance with experiences in the field of contemporary art. As professionals connected to MASP, Andujar and Love organized exhibitions, such as Grande São Paulo/76, taught courses at the Photography Laboratory, mediated negotiations for holding events, exchanged correspondence with important photographers and public figures of the time and founded the museum's Department of Photography. From the documentation available at the Historical Archive of MASP, it was possible to recover the collaborative work of Claudia Andujar and George Love, as well as its reverberation in the debate about the entrance of photography into art museums. Their relationship with Pietro Maria Bardi, then director of MASP, was also investigated and provides elements for understanding the power games involved in this process. Studies by authors such as Christopher Phillips, Rosalind Krauss, Douglas Crimp and Philippe Dubois constituted relevant theoretical references. The research results contribute to the understanding of a period in which photography was definitively inserted in the exhibition agenda and in the collections of art museums in the city of São Paulo, and points to the complexity of the relationships between art museums, photography and archives in the 1970's.
