Joia brasileira

Abstract in English
Caio Mourão worked for over five decades in the arts field, particularly in jewelry, leaving an inventive and irreverent legacy. The artist sought to give back to jewelry its sense of adornment, bringing to discussion the use of less precious materials. His poetics in jewelry was uncommon, transiting between ornament and object, archeology and modernity. Grounded on a keen knowledge of art history, Mourão visited with his work ancient civilizations, literature, mythology, and science fiction, besides many other motivating sources. As part of the 1960s avant-garde movement, the artist enhanced his expression by relating jewelry with people's intimacy, thus, blurring borders, inverting spaces, and boldly proposing metaphors. Caio Mourão was also responsible for including the Artistic Jewelry Exhibition in the São Paulo Biennial pavilion in 1963. This case study was conducted through a bibliographic review and data gathering from the artist's private collection, documents in historical archives, and testimonials from the artist's contemporaries. Through the review of Mourão's career, which started with painting in the 1950s, we seek to contribute to the consolidation of the memory of the new jewelry made in Brazil from the 1960s onward and demonstrate Caio Mourão's protagonism.
