Abstract in English
The present thesis deals with the works "Natura Morta" (v.1359), from 1939, and "Natura Morta" (v.506), from 1946, by the Italian artist Giorgio Morandi, which make up the collection of Italian paintings of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo (MAC USP). With the objective of clarifying and investigating issues such as provenance, collecting, the history of the works, the intrinsic characteristics of the paintings and the reception of both the artist and his works, the research is divided into three chapters. The first one, "Morandi e o ambiente brasieliro", deals with subjects such as the artist's participation in the Brazilian Biennials and the speeches produced by his participation, especially in view of the figures of Mário Pedrosa, Sérgio Milliet and Pietro Maria Bardi. In the second chapter, "Colecionismo e Proveniência", we propose the examination of textual documentation to clarify the intricacies that allowed the incorporation and exhibition of works by the Museum of Contemporary Art. Finally, the third chapter, "Análise das obras", addresses some practical arguments, such as creative processes, the use of color and the construction of pictorial space. As a result of the research, we shed light on the negotiations for the acquisition of the 1946 painting. Furthermore, through technical-scientific analysis, we discovered intrinsic characteristics of the works, such as the presence of objects in layers superimposed by the painting.
