Negritude no Caribe
Realismo mágico e arte do Caribe
Surrealismo caribenho

Abstract in English
The thesis considers how the act of interpreting the literary works of renowned intellectuals, many of which affiliated to surrealism or to its branches in the American continent, permeated the works of Wifredo Lam within the realm of "illustration". Such conciliation created an integrated system of relationships that greatly bolster the valuation of his work. The thesis further analyzes how this genre places Lam among the protagonists of the avant-garde d'outremer, where the programmatic derivations of surrealism converge: the "negritude"(blackness), "antilleanity", and "magic realism". Theses concepts, all of which are reoccurring throughout the thesis and which we call "programmatic" derivations - in the sense given by the vanguard to words that condense the tone of maniphests -, were central references for Lam, yet they remain lacking within in the bibliography dedicated to the artist. Being inherent to the works and to the authors that Lam was given to illustrate, they set up a basic theoretical framework for this thesis. It draws attention to the concepts stipulated by the writers that Lam illustrates. Namely, blackness, decanted through the partnership with Aimé Césaire; antilleanity, manifested in the collaboration with Édouard Glissant, and finally magic realism, shared with Gabriel García Márquez.
