O objeto principal desta tese é o Centro de Estudos ASTER, um híbrido entre ateliê e escola dedicado principalmente à formação de artistas visuais na cidade de São Paulo entre 1978 e 1981. No ASTER, foram realizadas tanto palestras, conferências e cursos teóricos ligados a disciplinas como História da Arte, Filosofia e Ensino de Arte, como também cursos de criação artística ligados às Artes Visuais, especialmente às técnicas de gravura. Para compreender a experiência artística e pedagógica do ASTER, são analisadas as trajetórias profissionais precedentes dos seus fundadores: Donato Ferrari, Julio Plaza, Regina Silveira e Walter Zanini. Para identificar as contribuições do ASTER para a História da Arte e para a História do Ensino de Arte no Brasil, também são tratadas neste estudo iniciativas conectadas com o ASTER: a criação da Faculdade de Artes da Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado, a gestão de Walter Zanini no Museu de Arte Contemporânea da USP, a criação da Escola de Comunicações e Artes da USP, as atividades de videoarte da produtora Cockpit, a elaboração do livro História Geral da Arte no Brasil e a organização da XVI Bienal de São Paulo.

Abstract in English
The main object of this thesis is the ASTER Study Center, a hybrid institution that worked as an atelier and an arts school mainly dedicated to the formation of visual artists in the city of São Paulo in between 1978 and 1981. ASTER hosted lectures, conferences and theorical courses related to subjects such as Art History, Philosophy and Art Education, as well as courses in artistic creation in Visual Arts, especially engraving techniques. Aiming to comprehend ASTER's artistic and pedagogical experience, the previous professional trajectories of its founders: Donato Ferrari, Julio Plaza, Regina Silveira and Walter Zanini are analyzed. This research also investigates some initiatives connected to ASTER in order to identify its contributions towards Art History and History of Art Education in Brazil: the creation of the Arts College of the Armando Alvares Penteado Foundation, Walter Zanini's management of the Museum of Contemporary Arts of the University of São Paulo, the creation of the School of Communication and Arts of University of São Paulo, the video art activities of the producer Cockpit, the producing of the book História Geral da Arte no Brasil and the organization of the 16th São Paulo Art Biennial.
