Abstract in English
This dissertation's objective is to contribute to the historiography of Brazilian and international modern art through the unveiling of unknown data about the trajectory of Candido Portinari in the United States between 1935 and 1945. The methodology employed is that of Giulio Carlo Argan; therefore, Portinari's artworks were both visually analyzed, and assessed within the context of the studied time frame and the artist's psyche. The achieved results were extremely rich and well-grounded, because of extensive research carried in numerous archives in Brazil and the United States. This research unearthed a considerable amount of previously unknown documents, which are referenced on the footnotes and broad bibliography. The documents examined lead to the conclusion that the enormous success achieved by Portinari in the United States, in the researched time frame, happened as a confluence of Portinari's artistic qualities and the conjuncture of the political, social, and cultural environments of Brazil and the United States.
