Abstract in English
Modern Nostalgia proposes a review of how modernism was interpreted, presented and marketed between the 1960s and 1970s, which actors were engaged in its promotion and its political-cultural role in a decade marked by censorship and repression. The research sought to interpret the functioning of the national artistic system in three aspects: the public acclaim of the modernist movement during the commemorations in 1972 of the fiftieth anniversary of the Week of Modern Art; the contribution of the State as promoter of cultural policies that institutionally made this national art project viable; and the role of the art market as the apex of consecration, which incorporated status, tradition, and rarity into the commercialization of modern art in auctions. The combination of these elements made possible to understand how the recognition offered by commercial success could only occur after the historical relevance of those works, driven by authoritarian thinking that sought in this ballast a sense of continuity, even if not linear. This revision, certainly more comprehensive, culminates in the analysis of the donation of the collection of engravings of the Central Bank of Brazil to MAC USP. From whatever angle we questioned the works, gaps in the conditions of the art market reinforced the need to understand the context of its production, so that a thorough discussion of the consecration of modernism and the art market was imperative.
