The use of econometric models to predict the price of pulp in the international market: a comparison between univariate and multivariate models

Abstract in English
An approach that may be adopted in the analysis of the process of formulating market prices for a commodity is the one that takes into consideration the relevance of the influence that the instability of markets have on determining the level of prices. In this sense, two are the highlighted factors that strongly influence the market: speculative factors (future prices expectation) and non-speculative factors (offer and demand flows. The application of econometric models has been analyzed, in this project as a way to offer support for market player's decisions regarding the purchasing or selling of a commodity. This analysis was developed for the instance of predicting the prices of pulp in the international market. The involved research sought to incorporate into the model, the possible explanatory variables of the price af pulp, based on data obtained through market operators (tradings) and companies of the sector. The utilized series comprehend the period between the 3rd quarter of 1986 and the 4th quarter of 2002. This project involved the comparative analysis between three modems: Univariate Model for the price of pulp; VAR - Vector-Autoregressive model between the price of pulp and the level of stocks; VEC - Vector of Error Correction between the price of pulp, the Level of stocks and an estimate of the world demand of pulp considering the GNP series of the United States, Japan and a 'proxy" for Europe (considering Germany, France and ltaly). Based on the results of the developed models, it is possible to conclude that the both static and dynamic VEC model are the one that produced the best forecasts. For the univariate model, AR(1 ) model was the one that displayed the best adherence to the series. The analysis of the results lead us to conclude that the utilization of the econometric methodology for predicting pulp price in the international market may offer to the companies of the sector a higher control in future price trend to the long term, creating the possibility of a higher forecasting capacity of future cash flows and returns on future investments.
