Abstract in English
The answers given about the socio-environmental crisis that is worsening at world levels have proved to be insufficient. The agro-export reality in which Brazil is inserted within the structure of the agro-food system, contributes to the conditions of environmental degradation and the deepening of social inequalities. The university can contribute to confronting the socio-environmental impacts generated by the concentration of business clusters along the agricultural production chain, stimulating participatory research aimed at influencing public policies to improve the existential conditions of family farmers, through the strengthening of local food systems. This research, which is characterized as a case study, was developed in the municipality of Itatinga - SP, located 225 km from the capital of São Paulo and with a population of approximately 20 thousand inhabitants. Its objective was to promote an intervention that would contribute to bringing the Forest Sciences Experimental Station (EECFI) of the "Luiz de Queiroz" Higher School of Agriculture (ESALQ/USP) closer to the population of the municipality, at the same time that it could investigate the relationship between family farming, public policies aimed at this public and local marketing channels. The results indicate that the theme of the research and its educational and cooperation intention, allowed the formation of a working group together with the institution of rural extension of the municipality, which started to collaborate actively with the planning and execution of the research actions, inspired in participatory methodologies and a critical view of society and the agro-food system. The other results show that family farming, even with a diffuse performance, has a relevant role in local marketing, even if it is restricted to a few families, those with greater capacity for insertion in markets. It is evident that contributing to improvements in the living and working conditions of local family farming depends on its articulation as a social category and the university can be an institution that enhances this construction.
