Diante do cenário de agravamento da crise socioambiental global com o avanço das mudanças climáticas e seus eventos extremos, a conservação dos ecossistemas naturais torna-se cada vez mais urgente e, por conta da magnitude e extensão da degradação, também é necessário promover processos de recuperação e restauração ecológica em grande escala. Observa-se nas últimas décadas o avanço do campo técnico e científico da ecologia da restauração e a institucionalização da restauração, em especial a florestal, com o aumento crescente de pesquisas, projetos e políticas públicas em nível nacional e mundial. A restauração ecológica aparece, assim, como uma estratégia para adiar o fim do mundo e também para curar não apenas ecossistemas degradados, como também a própria relação entre ser humano e natureza, por envolver processos de experimentação e cocriação entre ambos, a partir de diferentes práticas, sentidos e objetivos. Por carregar uma intencionalidade humana que a orienta e conduz, cabe perguntar como, por quem e qual restauração tem sido promovida e realizada. Visando contribuir para o fortalecimento dos aspectos socioculturais da restauração e tendo a Mata Atlântica como enfoque, a tese carrega duas hipóteses: a primeira delas é que a restauração florestal no bioma está alinhada com a perspectiva de modernização ecológica, insuficiente para romper com a lógica que gera a degradação socioambiental que a demanda e os desafios existentes para a regeneração de Gaia. Para isso, foi realizado um estudo exploratório multirrefencial baseado em um levantamento virtual e pesquisa documental de atores e iniciativas de restauração, e entrevistas, com a triangulação de dados e sujeitos. A partir da análise textual discursiva, buscou-se compreender como a restauração florestal é concebida e realizada e como a participação se insere ou se relaciona com ela. Os resultados apontam que a restauração florestal na Mata Atlântica vem se fortalecendo a partir de uma diversidade de iniciativas com inúmeras conquistas, Porém, são pautadas pela racionalidade instrumental e voltadas à recuperação, a regularização ambiental e a produtividade, e, assim, reproduzindo o projeto da modernidade. A segunda hipótese é que, portanto, de que a restauração deve estar comprometida com mudanças culturais profundas e com outras relações paradigmáticas com a natureza. Para isso é discutida a realização da participação educadora ambientalista que tenha caráter emancipatório.

Faced with the worsening scenario of the global socio-environmental crisis with the advancement of climate change and its extreme events, the conservation of natural ecosystems becomes increasingly urgent and, due to the magnitude and extent of degradation, it is also necessary to promote recovery processes and large-scale ecological restoration. In recent decades, progress has been observed in the technical and scientific field of restoration ecology and the institutionalization of restoration, especially forestry, with an increasing number of research, projects and public policies at national and global levels. Ecological restoration thus appears as a strategy to postpone the end of the world and also to heal not only degraded ecosystems, but also the very relationship between human beings and nature, as it involves processes of experimentation and co-creation between both, from different practices, meanings and objectives. Because it carries a human intentionality that guides and leads it, it is worth asking how, by whom and which restoration has been promoted and carried out. Aiming to contribute to the strengthening of the restoration socio-cultural aspects and having the Atlantic Forest as a focus, the thesis carries two hypotheses: the first is that forest restoration in the biome is aligned with the perspective of ecological modernization, insufficient to break with the logic that generates the socio-environmental degradation that the demand and the existing challenges for the regeneration of Gaia. For this, a multi-reference exploratory study was carried out based on a virtual survey and documentary research of actors and restoration initiatives, and interviews, with the triangulation of data and subjects. Based on discursive textual analysis, we sought to understand how forest restoration is conceived and carried out and how participation is inserted or related to it. The results indicate that forest restoration in the Atlantic Forest has been strengthening from a variety of initiatives with numerous achievements, however, they are guided by instrumental rationality and aimed at recovery, environmental regularization and productivity, and, thus, reproducing the project of modernity. The second hypothesis is, therefore, that restoration must be committed to profound cultural changes and other paradigmatic relationships with nature. For this, the realization of environmental educator participation is discussed.
