A fitopatologia é o estudo científico das doenças infecciosas de plantas que se estende para diversos aspectos da interação entre fitopatógeno, espécie vegetal, ambiente e seus impactos na sociedade. O trabalho dos fitopatologistas contribuiu para aumentar produtividade dos sistemas agrícolas, mas as doenças de plantas e epidemias de fitopatógenos ainda são ameaças à produção de alimentos. Além disso, apesar dos notáveis aumentos na produção agrícola nas últimas décadas, quase um bilhão de pessoas atualmente sofre de nutrição inadequada e o Brasil, um dos maiores produtores agrícolas do mundo, voltou para o Mapa da Fome em 2021. Neste contexto, o presente trabalho se propôs a analisar as contribuições, lacunas e perspectivas dentro da fitopatologia sobre a temática da segurança alimentar. Para identificar as contribuições, foi desenvolvida uma Revisão Narrativa a partir da relação entre a história da fitopatologia e a disponibilidade de alimentos, surgindo enquanto ciência após o episódio da Grande Fome na Irlanda no século XIX e tendo papel central na Revolução Verde do século XX. Além disso, foi desenvolvida uma Revisão Sistemática de Literatura a fim de observar como se apresentaram os trabalhos que relacionam termos da fitopatologia com segurança alimentar nos últimos cinco anos e quais as lacunas observadas no período. Para identificar as lacunas e perspectivas, foram analisadas 78 participações em um formulário veiculado entre fitopatologistas brasileiros, além de desenvolvidas 6 entrevistas com especialistas da área em suas diferentes atuações. Observou-se que a associação entre fitopatologia e disponibilidade de alimentos é bastante clara entre os atuantes na área, mas que boa parte das pesquisas ainda se restringe aos sistemas de monocultivo de alto insumo. Existe uma carência de trabalhos que se dediquem à segurança alimentar dentro da fitopatologia e embora a importância do tema seja amplamente reconhecida, faltam considerações concretas nos trabalhos da área. Da parte da fitopatologia, muito foi realizado, mas ainda há muito o que se contribuir com redirecionamento de pesquisas que promovam o fortalecimento de sistemas agrícolas resilientes e com maior responsabilidade socioambiental.

Phytopathology is the scientific study of plant infectious diseases that extends to different aspects of the interaction between plant pathogens, plant species, environment and their impacts on society. The work of phytopathologists has contributed to increasing the productivity of agricultural systems, but plant diseases and epidemics of phytopathogens are still threats to food production. Furthermore, despite notable increases in agricultural production in recent decades, nearly a billion people currently suffer from inadequate nutrition and Brazil, one of the largest agricultural producers in the world, returned to the Hunger Map in 2021. In this context, the present work proposed to analyze the contributions, gaps and perspectives within the phytopathology on the theme of food security. To identify the contributions, a Narrative Review was developed based on the relationship between the history of phytopathology and food availability, emerging as a science after the episode of the Great Famine in Ireland in the 19th century and playing a central role in the Green Revolution of the 20th century. In addition, a Systematic Literature Review was developed in order to observe how the works that relate terms of phytopathology with food safety in the last five years were presented and what gaps were observed in the period. To identify gaps and perspectives, 78 participations were analyzed in a form distributed among Brazilian plant pathologists, in addition to 6 interviews carried out with specialists in the field in their different activities. It was observed that the association between plant pathology and food availability is quite clear among those working in the area, but that much of the research is still restricted to high-input monoculture systems. There is a lack of works dedicated to food safety within phytopathology and although the importance of the subject is widely recognized, there is a lack of concrete considerations in the works in the area. On the part of phytopathology, there is a lot to contribute with redirecting research that promote the strengthening of resilient agricultural systems with greater social and environmental responsibility.
