Abstract in English
The farming monoculture system had its roots in the socioeconomic situation of the colonial portuguese Brazil. Since this period, there have been drastic transformations in rural landscapes and rural socioeconomic relations, represented by the implementation of agricultural production in plantation system supported by slave labor relations, latifundium and the demands of the international market. The heritage of this productive system has left marks until the present day. The green revolution and the industrialization of agricultural activities have reformulated labor and rural socioeconomic relations, without altering the deep social inequalities in the countryside. This model was also developed in Piracicaba/SP, especially with the cultivation of sugarcane. Indeed, this rural development pattern has contributed to weakening the diversity of products and services from the countryside, in addition to compelling family farmers to seek alternatives in nearby urban centers. In this context, this work is based on an investigation into the situation of the rural producers who practiced or still practice family farming activities. Proposing a study of its socioeconomic dynamics, allowing to understand the strategies of overcoming difficulties that enables to perpetuate its condition as a farmer. The aim is also to identify innovative initiatives to ensure the minimum conditions for the reproduction of the small-scale family farming model, with a possible regain of food sovereignty. Our hypothesis admits that a diversified agricultural production corresponds to an effective strategy to respond to a growing demand for local products, allowing to maintain production and eventually intensify it. For this, it was a question of interviewing the population of rural neighborhoods involved in Family farming to identify the potentialities and difficulties of socio-economic reproduction strategies. The presence of small-scale Family farming was observed, however, the current highlight is the processing of local agricultural products and their artesanal production, together with other strategies to enhance culture and local identity.
