Abstract in Portuguese
Melampodium camphoratum (L.f.) Fotografias acompanham a descrição farmacobotânica e a análise cromatográfica.

Abstract in English
Melampodium camphoratum (L.f.) Baker (Asteraceae), commonly known as" erva-de-São-João" and "São-João-caá", is a vegetal species, that have been used in Brazilian folk medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders and hepatitis. The crude drug and the hydroalcoolic extract obtained from its aerial parts were pharmacognostically characterized. The morphoanatomical study was conducted, aiming at disclosing characters for the diagnosis of the crude drug. The younger stems, usually form the bulk of the herb and show six conspicuous, longitudinal ridges. The leaves present veins fine, more evident on the lower surface and both surfaces pubescent. The leaf and stem reveal characters for the family. Despite that, some relevant observations include the kind and localization of glandular and nonglandular thricomes, the organization of the epithelial cells of secretory canals and its localization. The crude drug is aromatic, stronger when freshly crushed, characteristic and camphoraceous. The crude drug, volatile oil and extract (EBL) were analyzed by thin layer chromatography (TLC). Photographs of morfoanatomical and TLC are presented. Flavonoids and terpenoids were detected in crude drug and extract (EBL). The volatile oil was analyzed by GC-MS. The most abundant substances were α-phellandrene (35,8%), camphor (26,9%) and camphene (12,2%). It exhibited antimicrobial activity. The extract (EBL) shown to protect rats from developing gastric ulcers induced by HCl/ethanol, low antimicrobial activity and promising antioxidant activity (Q1/2 = 4,42 µg/ml). Acute toxicity test was carried out. There were no modifications in body weight, water or food intake or in the external aspect of kidneys, heart, lungs and liver.
