Objetivo: A finalidade do presente trabalho foi comparar o estado nutricional e o nível de anemia ferropriva entre crianças que freqüentam creches com clientelas de diferentes níveis socioeconômicos. Métodos: Realizou-se um estudo transversal no qual foram estudadas 165 crianças de 3 a 6 anos de idade de três creches de diferentes níveis socioeconômicos do município de Votuporanga, interior do Estado de São Paulo. O estado nutricional foi avaliado pela determinação dos índices de peso para idade (P/I), estatura para idade e (E/I) usando como ponto de corte o valor do escore Z = -1. Foi feita dosagem de hemoglobina pelo fotômetro portátil HemoCue®, considerando-se, como anemia, níveis inferiores a 11g/dL. As informações sobre as crianças e sua classificação socioeconômica foram obtidas por questionários aplicados às mães ou responsáveis. Resultados: Encontraram-se valores médios de hemoglobina muito próximos e porcentagens de anemia não muito diferentes entre as três creches. Quanto ao peso para idade (P/I), também não houve diferenças estatisticamente significantes, no entanto, quanto, à estatura para idade (E/I), houve maior déficit a creche de menor nível socioeconômico. Conclusão: Conclui-se que a creche tem importância como forma de proteção contra desnutrição crônica e de anemia ferropriva para crianças de famílias de baixo nível socioeconômico.

Objective: The objective of the present work was to compare the nutritional condition and the level of the iron deficiency anaemia among children who attend day care center of different socio-economical levels. Methods: It was realized a transversal study which studied 165 children from 3 to 6 years old in three day care center with different socio-economical levels in Votuporanga, a city of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. After weight and height measurements, the nutritional condition was evaluated using the indices Z score weight for age (P/I) and height for age (E/I), using as cut point the value z = -1. The haemoglobin level was measured using HemoCue ®, a portable photometer; a child was considered as having anaemia when his haemoglobin concentration was less than 11 g/dL. A structured questionnaire was used to obtain socio-economical informations. Discussion: The mean values of haemoglobin and the percentage of anaemia were very close among the three day care center; the means of weight for age (P/I) indices were also alike. However, as for the means of height for age (E/I) indices, there was a deficit for the children at the nursery of lower socio-economical level. Conclusion: Day care center is important for poor children as a form of protection against acute malnutrition and iron deficiency anaemia for children from family of low socio-economical level.
