Abstract in English
The eating disorders anorexia and bulimia nervosa are syndromes characterized by inadequate feeding habits and behavior. Altered body perception and excessive levels of physical activity can also be observed. Undergraduates from courses in the medical area are frequently mentioned as the most susceptible to the development of these diseases. The aim of this work was to evaluate whether students entering physical education courses as well as students from the medical area in a private university from Belo Horizonte have a greater prevalence of eating disorders' symptoms when compared to students from other course. We have also tested whether variables such as age, actual and desired BMI, body image and physical activity could be associated to presence of eating disorders. A greater prevalence of symptoms for eating disorders among Physical Education students in relation to overall students could not be found. Neither could a prevalence of eating disorders symptoms among students in the health courses area in relation to other course. However, there was a greater prevalence of eating disorders' symptoms among university students in comparison to the values cited by the American Psychiatric Association for American young women. The body image was the only variable that could be associated to the presence of eating disorders' symptoms. The variable physical activity was the closest to the hypothesis of association to the presence of eating disorders.
