Abstract in English
The mineral status of twenty five 17 to 31 years old brazilian water polo athletes during a pre-competition phase and of 21 non athletes women of the University of S. Paulo community was evaluated. Weight, height, %fat, energy expenditure, VO2, macro and micronutrient (Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu and Zn) daily ingestion, serum mineral concentration (ICP-MS), ferritin, %transferrin saturation and hemoglobin composed the data matrix for multivariate analysis. On one hand the cluster analysis was important to homogenize groups; on the other hand the canonical analysis showed that the higher the serum Fe concentration and the smaller the serum Cu concentration the better the iron nutriture. The proportion of females with Fe deficiency and anemia was higher in the controls, and this finding was associated to a lower bioavailable Fe in their diet. Although without statistic significance another important observation was that the female athletes had serum Cu, Zn, Mg and Ca concentrations lower than that of non athletes and this tendency should be tested in a largar sample.
