Abstract in English
Cement is one of the most manufactured materials in the world. The global cement industry account for at least 5-7% of anthropogenic CO2 emissions, so it is an important sector for CO2 mitigation strategies. An alternative to reduce the carbon footprint is to replace cement with solid waste. FGD gypsum is a by-product on the purification system of gases generated after the coal combustion. Composed mainly of calcium sulfate, this waste is generated in large quantities and its recycling is scarce, being generally disposed of in landfills. In the present study, the application of FGD gypsum in mortars was investigated. The physicochemical characteristics of FGD gypsum, commercial sand and cement were determined. The mortars were produced according to specific standards and the specimens were molded with Portland cement CPII-F-32, sand and contents of 0% (reference), 25%, 50% and 75% replacement by FGD gypsum. After curing times of 1, 3, 7, 28 and 91 days, the cementitious materials were subjected to tests to determine their physicochemical and mechanical properties. The use of FDG gypsum for the production of cement matrices can result in less exploitation of natural resources and stimulate the circular economy, being a way to add value to the management of industrial waste. FDG gypsum can be used to minimize Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions associated with the civil construction sector. Furthermore, it can contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
