Treatment of oil sludge waste using the microwave pyrolysis technique

Abstract in English
Oily sludge waste is a significant liability generated by the oil industry that contains radionuclides of natural origin (NORM) and is composed of water, crude oil (heavier fractions) and sediments. This waste is of great concern due to its large volume, its chemical and radiological toxicity and the lack of regulations for its disposal. The treatment for drying oily sludge by microwave pyrolysis is an attractive method for the removal of hydrocarbons and water, since it provides a rapid and selective heating process that can be used to break the water/oil emulsion, facilitating the separation of hydrocarbons and water from the solid fraction. The objective of this work is to develop a process for drying the oily sludge produced by the petroleum industry by microwave pyrolysis, obtaining a dry sediment containing radionuclides that can be compacted and stored in a smaller volume and with greater safety, and a water/oil mixture that can be disposed of as non-NORM waste. Samples of raw oily sludge received from the oil extraction industry were treated with microwaves, and tests were carried out with constant time and power. The results showed that microwave treatment was in treating oily sludge waste and obtaining dry sediment, for samples with higher water and oil content.
