Abstract in English
The development of biodegradable films is an alternative to the use of environmentally unfriendly packaging. For these productions, several natural polymers can be used, among them, starch, which has good characteristics, and it is easy to obtain. The addition of free or encapsulated natural antioxidants can further contribute to the development of functional films with antioxidant activity. The objective of this work was to develop active films, based on natural polymers from a renewable source, starch, by the technique of casting and extrusion, added with free and nonencapsulated bioactive compounds of hibiscus and turmeric and the action of irradiation by electron beams. The bioactive compounds of hibiscus and turmeric were extracted by microwave and ultrasound with different solvents and temperatures, as well as characterization in relation to antioxidant activity, determination of phenolic compounds, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities. The encapsulation of these compounds was carried out by vaporization drying (nanospray dryer) and characterized in terms of physical, physical-chemical, morphological, bioactive, colorimetric parameters and particle diameter and size. The most stable particles of the extracts were incorporated into the films prepared by extrusion. The film-forming solutions for the casting technique were prepared at concentrations of 5% (w/v) of potato starch, 3% glycerol and 0.5% calcium propionate (C6H10CaO4) under constant agitation until starch gelatinization. The films with the bioactive compounds were prepared with a 1 and 2% solution of hibiscus and turmeric, with the same proportions of glycerol plasticizer, and preservative (calcium propionate). Analysis of the viscosity profile of these hydrogels was performed. The films processed by extrusion were prepared with the particles encapsulated with the bioactive compounds. Five formulations were prepared: starch film, starch film with 1 and 2% hibiscus nanoparticles and starch film with 1 and 2% turmeric nanoparticles. After preparation, the films were irradiated with electron beam at doses of 5, 10, 20 e 40 kGy. Ionizing irradiation was used to verify the influence on the bioplastic properties of starch-based films, as well as the mechanical and barrier properties modifications. These bioplastics were characterized in terms of physical, physicochemical, morphological, bioactive, mechanical, barrier and thermal properties. The properties of the films studied were affected depending on the proportion of antioxidant added.
