Abstract in English
Prostate cancer is the most common chronic disease among men in most parts of the world. According to the National Cancer Institute (INCA), in Brazil in 2017, 61,000 new cases were registered with 15,391 deaths. In 2018 the numbers jumped to 68,200 new records. Among the main treatments, radiotherapy has been shown to be effective in controlling and curing the disease. However, it is noted that the satisfaction rate of the reports presented in surveys by the patients themselves, are not the most encouraging, and there are few surveys that point to the support of the hospital team. The aim of this study was to collect data from medical records and questionnaires, to prepare recommendations for radiotherapy units. Data were collected from 147 patients and of this total, 51 their answered the questionnaire with an approach regarding the level of knowledge and need for support during treatment, already the medical records, it was possible to assess the adverse effects of the disease. It is identified that more than 50% their knew little or very little about prostate cancer, the place of diagnosis and treatment center being the environments that most contributed to the knowledge of the disease, with little participation, the family and the means communications. The survey shows that the rate of referral to health professionals through medical records was lower than the manifestations of the need for support observed through the questionnaire. It is noted that it is difficult to insert support and quality of life policies for patients with prostate cancer and that professionals who work in oncology and radiotherapy centers underestimate the effects of the disease. It can be seen through research, that many of the symptoms and debilitations could be mitigated if there was a greater interaction between the health team and the patient, reducing the hospitalization period, complications due to radiation side effects and accelerating the patient's integration to the social environment.
