Abstract in English
The field of microstructured gaseous detectors currently represents a sector of technologies in dynamic growth, among which detectors of the type TH-GEM (THick Gas Electron Multiplier ) are highlighted for use in large scale and generalized applications. The variations of detectors in this concept have been used for dosimetry for different types of radiation beams and in the production of images. To contribute to this research line, the objective of this work was the development of a prototype with adequate characteristics for metrology of low energy ionizing radiation (standardized mammography beams). This study was based on simulations to optimize the conditions of detection of the detector, construction of a prototype, and its experimental characterization. The influence of each component of the TH-GEM detector on the energy deposited in the sensitive volume was determined by Monte Carlo simulation, obtaining the values of 0.09% for the enclosure, 0.01% for the collecting plate, and 44% for the amplification plate. The thickness of 6 mm for the aluminum shield was obtained for an efficiency of 99%. The built-in amplification board consists of a printed circuit board perforated in a hexagonal pattern, with holes of (0.254 ± 0.021) mm in diameter and (0.11 ± 0.12) mm between them. The amplification plate was subjected to electrical characterization where the values of (15.3 ± 0.4) GΩ for resistance and (65.3 ± 1.7) pS for conductance were obtained. For the experimental characterization, the TH-GEM detector was filled with the mixture of Ar/CH4 in the concentration 90/10. Values for the effective gain of 1.45 ± 0.10, 1.60 ± 0.10, 1.90 ± 0.12, and 2.20 ± 0.10 were obtained experimentally for the potential differences applied to the amplification board of 200 V, 300 V, 400 V, and 450 V respectively. Also, it was possible to verify a linear behavior of the detector response with the variation of the current in the X-ray tube.
