O câncer de mama se constitui em um grave problema de saúde pública. É a neoplasia que mais acomete mulheres, excluindo o câncer de pele não melanoma, em grande parte do mundo e a principal causa de morte por neoplasias malignas em mais de 100 países. No Brasil, segundo o INCA, a estimativa para o triênio 2000-2022 é de 66.280 casos novos, o que equivalerá a 29,7% dos tipos de câncer em mulheres. Neste contexto, este estudo teve como objetivo descrever as características demográficas e epidemiológicas de pacientes maiores de 60 anos com câncer de mama atendidos na Unidade de Oncologia da Fundação São Francisco Xavier em Ipatinga, Minas Gerais, nos anos de 2015 a 2017. Utilizou-se o modelo transversal de investigação, com abordagem e análise quantitativa dos dados. Os resultados evidenciaram que a maioria dos pacientes eram do sexo feminino (98%), tinham idades entre 60 a 70 anos (54, 9%), 143 (60,3%) se consideraram da raça parda, 144 (61%) eram casados, 118 (49,8%) tinham o ensino fundamental completo, 149 (63%) negaram tabagismo e 154 (65%) etilismo. Quanto à situação clínica, 118 (50%) pacientes estavam sem sinais de doença em atividade, o Carcinoma Ductal Infiltrante foi o tipo mais predominante, com 143 (60,3%) casos. Conclui-se que este estudo foi importante por ser o primeiro levantamento a respeito do câncer de mama em idosas realizado nesta unidade oncológica, podendo contribuir para o desenvolvimento de ações que visem melhorar as medidas preventivas, o acesso ao diagnóstico precoce, o prognóstico e a reduzir, ainda mais, a quantidade de óbitos em decorrência da neoplasia maligna da mama.

Breast cancer is a serious public health problem. It is the cancer that most affects women, excluding non-melanoma skin cancer in most part of the world. It is the leading cause of death from malignant neoplasms in more than 100 countries. In Brazil, according to INCA, the estimate for 2020- 2022 is an incidence of 66.280 new cases, equivalent to 29.5% of cancers types in women. In this context, this study aimed to describe the demographic and epidemiological characteristics of patients over 60 years old with breast cancer treated at the Oncology Unit São Francisco Xavier Foundation in Ipatinga, Minas Gerais, from 2015 to 2017. It was used the cross-sectional research model, with approach and quantitative data analysis. The results showed that most patients were female (98%), aged 60 to 70 years (54.9%), 143 (60.3%) considered people of color, 144 (61%) were married, 118 (49.8%) had completed elementary school, 149 (63%) denied smoking and 154 (65%) denied alcoholism. Regarding the clinical situation, 118 (50%) patients had no signs of active disease; infiltrating ductal carcinoma was the most predominant type, with 143 (60.3%) cases. To sum up, this study being the first performed in this cancer unit, may contribute to the development of actions aimed at improving preventive measures, access to early diagnosis, prognosis and to reduce further deaths due to malignant breast cancer.
