Abstract in English
Introduction: In the practice of occupational therapists, the appearance of individuals with decreased muscle strength due to several causes is frequent, and the evaluation is the starting point for the treatment. To assess the force applied to a given activity, one must take into account the time in which this force was used, using a computerized dynamometer, which graphically provides a force-time curve. Objective: To identify the characteristics of the force-time curve in subjects with and without upper limb dysfunctions during a sustained maximum handgrip effort. Method: Four groups were formed (elderly and young people without upper limb disorders, Osteoarthritis and Parkinson's Disease), being evaluated using a JAMAR® dynamometer, a manual force transducer and a questionnaire. Three attempts of maximal isometric effort were performed with the JAMAR® dynamometer, with an interval of 2 min between attempts and six with the transducer held for 10 s each, with intervals of 2 min between attempts. Participants were positioned according to ASHT recommendations. The kinetic data obtained have the typical form of force-time curves, which were analyzed in a Matlab® environment. Discrete points of the curve were identified, which include maximum force value, time to reach maximum force, force development rate and force development rate time. The curve values were explored in the time domain from mathematical modeling through non-linear regression and curve comparison. Results: The value of the maximum force of the average curve can be considered as a parameter of evaluation of the grip strength in tests of isometric effort, in substitution to the average maximum force. The Osteoarthritis and Parkinson's Disease groups showed a significant difference in maximal grip strength in relation to the others, with a greater mean curve maximal strength. The mean value of strength for the young group without dysfunction was lower in relation to the elderly without dysfunction. The young group without upper limb dysfunctions presented a rate of development of force majeure and the time of development rate of smaller force compared to Parkinson's disease. Conclusion: The relevance of the average curve in substitution of the average maximum force was evidenced; occupation is an influential variable on handgrip strength; the use of computerized dynamometers proved to be important, as it provides numerous information on the behavior of the force linked to the characteristics of the clinical condition of each individual, relevant elements for the clinical practice of occupational therapists and other professionals involved in their rehabilitation.
