SPONTANEUS GENERATION
Abstract in English
An historical episode that shows up frequently in several Brazilian textbooks is the contribution of Francesco Redi (1626-1698) to combat the idea of spontane-ous generation of insects. Redi performed a series of experiments which he ob-served worms appearing over decomposing food (meat, vegetables) inside open or partially open jars - an innovative experimental procedure for his time. From this, he defended the idea that those worms were not spontaneously generated as thought, but stemmed from eggs laid by flies and other insects that might have had access to meat or vegetables. However, in parallel, Redi kept alligned to the conception of generation from a "vital principle" in other cases, like "worms" that appear in plants or inside animals. At the same time, other thinkers also looked into this matter and their conclusions were various. Those are the cases of Robert Hooke, William Harvey and Philipo Bonanni, three of Redi's contemporaries that studied the generation of living beings We consider that a narrow view of History of Science, one that only mentions the past researcher's "hits", offers a distorted perspective about the nature of Science. Discussed only through ideas supported by current Science, Redi's case could be pointed out as an example of "pseu-dohistory" that oversimplifies Science's process, romanticizes scientists and dra-matizes discoveries. Including episodes of History of Science in basic education needs to, therefore, be in line with conteporary historiography, with theoretical and empirical researches' contributions to the inclusion of History of Science in education and with official proposed curricula. For that is required the deve-lopment of contextualized historical approaches in Portuguese combined with to-ols that support its classroom use. In this context, this research focused on three main goals: the first one, of historical research, was to analyse, through present-day historiography, Francesco Redi's contributions to the debate about the origin and reproduction of living beings. The epistemic context of Redi's ideas was pro-vided by comparing his views with the ideas of three researchers that also appro-ached the subject on their time, William Harvey, Robert Hooke and Philippo Bo-nanni, characterizing the second objective of this research. The third goal of this research, of educational nature, was to develop an historical narrative suited to the second stage of elementary education and high school students, one that helps learning today's scientifical concepts about the origin and reproduction of living beings and promotes views based on Nature of Science. ("Francesco Redi (1626-1698) and the worms in meats: where do they came from?") was made based on methodology set by researchers of the interface between History of Science and Science teaching. We hope that the results of the historical research give resources on History of Science to training of Science teachers and the narrative becomes a tool that can be adapted and added to teachers' plans in different school realities, as well as be submitted to empirical evaluations of its effectiveness.
