In this work we use the theoretical framework of Scientific Literacy. We understand that Scientific Literacy is a process in continuous development that allows students to establish relationships between science and society so that they can make decisions and position themselves. We believe that one of the ways to analyze the understanding of the nature of science in the classroom is to see how teachers promote the sharing of epistemic practices, practices that are characteristic of science. For us, epistemic practices are the ways in which members of a given social group propose, communicate, evaluate and legitimize scientific knowledge (KELLY, 2008). Another important reference for our work is the Productive Disciplinary Engagement (PDE) proposed in the work by Engle and Conant (2002). The authors discriminate 3 levels of engagement that students can present: Engagement, Disciplinary Engagement and Productive Disciplinary Engagement. Our work objectives are to verify how the presence of indicators of PDE varies in different classes and groups, how the teacher's performance influences the development of PDE in the classroom and what are the relationships between the epistemic practices that students share and the Disciplinary Productive Engagement indicators. To investigate PDE in the classroom, we built an analytical tool with Engagement, Disciplinary Engagement and Productive Disciplinary Engagement indicators to analyze the discursive interactions of three groups of students. We analyzed an investigative didactic sequence on population dynamics, taught to 1st year high school classes. This didactic sequence had previously been analyzed regarding the sharing of epistemic practices in the classroom (GEROLIN, 2017) and now we analyze it regarding the presence of PDE. From our studies, we verified a relationship between the number of turns and episodes of the discursive interactions of the groups and their Engagement. We also verified that the Disciplinary Engagement and Productive Disciplinary Engagement indicators vary according to the proposed activity. In addition, our research corroborates the important role of the teacher in the classroom, since we verified in the situation analyzed a correlation between the presence of the teacher and a higher occurrence of PDE. Finally, we observed that groups that shared a greater diversity of epistemic practices also presented more frequent indicators of PDE.
