Abstract in English
The present work consists in a historical case study about the battery created by John Frederic Daniell (1790-1845), aiming at understanding the device originally developed and at analyzing its appropriation by textbooks. There are important disparities between didactic models of the Daniell cell developed over the 20th century and the original device, reflecting educational and didactic objectives that are not always explicit. The research had as its theoretical-methodological foundation the contemporary historiography of science. The historical case study was developed essentially from primary sources: two editions of a book written by Daniell, in addition to communications made by the author to the Royal Society between 1836 and 1839. Further, a sample of university level, general chemistry textbooks published in the USA, belonging to the collection of the Grupo de Pesquisa em História da Ciência e Ensino de Química (GHQ) from IQ-USP was surveyed. Chapters on electrochemistry contents and references to the Daniell battery were identified and recorded in a research diary. The historical case study reveals that Daniell was looking for a device capable of producing stable electric current for longer than other batteries developed so far. Previous batteries presented drawbacks mainly related to deterioration of the electrodes due the action of the electrolytes, which were mixtures of strong acids. Daniell worked for almost a decade on improvements to his device which he styled constant battery. Its arrangement allowed to maintain the concentration of electrolytes for longer and by making associations of up to seventy cells it was possible to maintain electric currents for hours. In addition to scientific interest, there were extrinsic motivations for Daniell's research work since the constant battery was related to the search for power sources for electric telegraphs. From the understanding of the original elaboration of the Daniell cell, an analysis of the appropriation of this device as a didactic model in chemistry textbooks was made. In general, it is noteworthy that since the first decades of the 20th century the Daniell cell is presented in textbooks with many differences in relation to the original device. In the 1930s to 1950s, the gravity cell was presented as the Daniell cell. In 21st century textbooks, the didactic model becomes the voltaic cell with a salt bridge. Didactic models for the Daniell cell were associated with different contents, with different roles in the teaching of electrochemistry. It was possible to observe the distance between the scientific and the teaching contexts: in the latter, there is practically no justification for associating the name of Daniell to different battery models.
