William Faulkner no Brasil

RESUMO: A proposta desta dissertação é investigar as traduções do romance As I Lay Dying (1930), do escritor americano William Faulkner, para a Língua Portuguesa do Brasil.

ABSTRACT: This masters dissertation proposal is to investigate the translations of William Faulkners As I Lay Dying (1930) into Brazilian Portuguese. From critical readings of these translations, I will discuss the discursive attitudes and strategies that two writer-translators adopted as part of the translation processes; more specifically, their attention directed to the fictional representation of linguistic variants in the speech of rural inhabitants in a county in the State of Mississippi. Among my research questions, one will be to explore whether or not, in their editorial projects published at different times, there were attempts to recreate variations in language which characterize multiple narrators styles, in particular those of Bundren family, in recurrent stream of consciousness throughout 59 (fifty-nine) interior monologues. To carry out this project, I selected from the research corpus the first excerpts of six narrative voices considered most expressive, namely: Addie, Dewey Dell, Dr. Peabody, Jewel, Vardaman, and Whitfield (who are, two women, one child, and three adult men). This translation analysis fits, in a theoretical context, a comparative methodology that is here based on two Brazilian translations: one by the literary critic baiano Hélio Pólvora de Almeida (1978); other by the journalist paulista Wladir Dupont (2001). The practical and theoretical paradigm of this study, in turn, focuses on Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS), which, in the perspective of literary translation and, of the critical comparison of translations, in the description and explanation of the contrasts in the languages here involved. The method combines systematic reflections on Gideon Tourys theory (1989; 1995), and the concepts of Comparative Studies (André Lefevere, 1992; Edwin Gentzler, 2009), around modern prose fiction translated into the Brazilian literary system. The results show that the translators sought to preserve the aspects of colloquial language in Faulkners novel, but the lexical creations, and dialect variation, its phonetics (via graphic representation of nonstandard orthography), were ignored when translated
