O presente trabalho se propõe a analisar e investigar elementos estruturantes da poesia do autor britânico J.R.R. Tolkien presente e interpolada em seus romances que compõem a trilogia The Lord of The Rings. Propomos uma leitura desses poemas a partir da investigação de aspectos formais dessa poesia que servem de índice para revelar a natureza da sua composição. Partimos da hipótese de que a sua obra poética se inscreve num processo palimpséstico, isto é, estabelecendo uma relação derivativa com obras como o Beowulf em Old English e a Elder Edda em Old Norse que compõem o cancioneiro germânico medieval. Investigamos, portanto, a relação que a lírica tolkieniana estabelece com a tradição poética germânica, a qual acreditamos ser melhor descrita a partir de uma aproximação entre tradução-criação delineada pelo pensamento de Haroldo de Campos, ao lado da noção de palimpsesto de Gérard Genette. A partir das camadas de características singulares que compõem a poética presente nesse corpus, esse trabalho se propõe a desvelar os vestígios dessa operação poética e sua relação com o cancioneiro germânico e como isso irá reverberar na materialidade dessa poesia, focalizando a incorporação de procedimentos composicionais da tradição poética germânica. Acreditamos que o percurso composicional desse corpus teria, portanto, partido de um exercício tradutório, emulatório e (re)criativo. Esse trabalho busca evidenciar, a partir da análise a que se propõe, o que a prosódia dos poemas do cancioneiro germânico sobreviventes em Old english e Old norse tem a contribuir para uma leitura desse corpus enquanto poesia e ainda como esses elementos serviram de enriquecimento do repertório poético da poesia inglesa moderna e contemporânea

The present work aims to analyse and investigate the constitutive elements of the poetry by the British author J.R.R. Tolkien which is present and interwoven in his novels of the trilogy of The Lord of the Rings. An examination of the poems is proposed from the investigation of formal aspects of this poetry which serve as evidence to reveal the nature of its composition. Our hypothesis is that his poetic works are inscribed in a palimpsestic process, that is, in ways of establishing a derivative relationship with works as Beowulf in Old English and the Elder Edda in Old Norse, all of which constitute the Germanic poetic tradition. Therefore, we investigate the connection between Tolkiens lyrical work and the Germanic poetic tradition. Such a connection, we believe, is better described in terms of a proximity between translation-creation traced by the thoughts of Haroldo de Campos alongside the notion of palimpsest in the work of Gerard Genette. Considering the layers of defining characteristics which constitute the poetics observed in this corpus, this work proposes an unveiling of the traces left by such a process and its connection with the Germanic poetic tradition as well as how this will resonate in the structure of Tolkiens poetry, focusing on the incorporation of compositional procedures from that tradition. We believe that the course of this corpus composition would have begun in an effort of translation and later emulation and re(creation). This work intends to expose, through the analysis here conducted, what the prosody of the poetry from the Germanic tradition remaining in Old English and Old Norse has to contribute to a in depth understanding of this corpus as poetry and still how these elements served to enhance the poetic repertoire of English language
