Abstract in English
The characterization of YHWH, Israel's only God, is unique in the Hebrew Bible, for the deity, while a character in the narrative, transcends it on the level of discourse, rising above other characters, the narrator, and even the reader. This exceptional dynamic of characterization is exemplarily illustrated in the narrative of Balaam (Num. 22-24), a text loaded with irony and ambiguity that recounts the attempts of a foreign seer to curse the people of Israel with the help of YHWH. The characterization of YHWH is analyzed using the criteria and methods outlined by Biblical narrative criticism, and the evidence obtained is used in discussing possible constructions of the divine in the narrative.
