O Estado Israelita na Exegese Bíblica de Dom Isaac Abravanel

Abstract in English
The present dissertation identifies in the biblical exegesis of Don Isaac Abravanel (1437-1508) elements of a proposed State for the Israelites in the biblical period. Following his long commentary/sermon on the book of Deuteronomy 16:18-20 and 17:8-20, there is a State constituted by courts and their judges, prophets and, eventually, a king. Abravanel shows himself extremely critical of the option for the monarchy, arguing that, for the Israelites, the king was absolutely expendable. From this point onwards, he develops a long sermon in which he defends alternatives of government systems to European national monarchies. Abravanel knew them up close as a statesman. He served directly to Kings Afonso V of Portugal and the couple Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile in Spain, as finance minister for these kings. And he knew how to use his experience and knowledge in the development of a political philosophy that ranges from the conception of the human being in his state of nature, addressing the origin of domination and loss of equality between men, establishment of power structures and submission of individual wills, the civilization process and the resistance right of a people before the tyrant.
