Abstract in English
The book, as a merchandise, moves from one country to another, both translated and in its original language. Translating is a way of making the contents of that book available to a larger number of people, since not every person can read it in its original language. The same book is often translated several times throughout the years, each translation emphasizing the aspect the translator considers more relevant. But one wonders if simply translating is enough for the public to understand a work that happens in a distant place, with cultural characteristics so distinct from their own. Some translators insert notes or commentaries, intending to make the reader aware of certain factors. Taking in consideration those aspects, we know several versions of novels and novellas from The Human Comedy, by Honoré de Balzac, have been and still are in circulation in Brazil since the 19th century. However, it was only in the 1940s that a complete edition, by Livraria do Globo publishing house, in Porto Alegre (RS), began to be published. With help from Paulo Rónai, the Hungarian critic residing in Brazil after being exiled during the Second World War, the initial project became something grand and went beyond translating and inserting commentary. After being invited to write a general introduction for the work, he noticed a few problems which could compromise the final product and suggested changes, such as adopting the French critical edition of the text, standardizing and revising the translations, writing introductions and footnotes, and selecting a set of critical texts and images, all of which were accepted by the publishing house. Our objetive here is analyzing how Paulo Rónai's work made the Brazilian edition so complete and important, designed in such a way that the foreign reader would not feel disoriented by a lack of knowledge of different aspects explored by the French writer. We present, at first, a historical route about the Livraria do Globo, responsible for the publication. We analyzed the introductions, the notes, the critical texts and the images and ended with a survey of how important this edition was for reading Balzac in our country.
