Abstract in English
Prostitution is a complex social practice, defined by a wide variety of relationships beyond sexual and economic exchanges. It is interpreted in many ways, both in the academic sphere and in the political and cultural spheres, in which polarities such as autonomy/heteronomy, affections/violence, resistance/oppression and choice/imposition take their places in an extensive field of debates. The present study aimed to know the life trajectory of women who work in the sex market on the outskirts of the city of São Paulo, seeking to articulate their experiences to the discussion about "life projects". It was developed from the combination of two theoretical-methodological approaches: ethnography and oral life history. It resulted in a description of the circuit of houses of prostitution in Guaianases, east of the capital, as well as in the recording of the life stories of three women, prostitutes, who work in these places. The analysis of their narratives allowed us to understand that, in a multiple and dynamic field of possibilities and restrictions, prostitution occupies different places and meanings in their lives, in the connections they establish between past, present and future. In view of their experiences, social roles and dilemmas, it can be seen that subjection and self-determination do not ocuppy absolute and fixed positions and instead of it, are revealed intertwined in the complexity of collective processes of construction of daily life.
